READ: Maus
I have recently read the classic graphic novel, Maus. Created by Art Spiegleman, it tells the story of Vladek Spiegleman’s time in Auschwitz. The book also shows the difficult relationship that Art has with his father. To balance the heavy material, Spiegleman has drawn all the characters as animals, Jews as mice, Germans as cats, Poles as pigs, etc.
WATCH: Wait Until Dark
What a phenomenal movie! You can tell that it is a stage adaptation because of the hotbox-style narrative. I loved the opening introduction to Mr. Roat. I was so confused but interested to understand what was going on. Hepburn plays the world champion blind lady superbly. I knew about the classic jump scare (and now you do) but knowing did not ruin it. I almost died of fright. You can tell that this was early in color film production because the movie is lit for black and white, and as a result the scene-by-scene compositions are stunning. A perfect scary movie to start October.
LISTEN: Siamese
I’m terrible at finding new music, but one band that I have found and love is Siamese. I found them via their trippy animated music videos and stuck around because of their music. Give them a listen.
How did I get here?
Going to NYCC was a real feather in my cap as a Sequential Artist. It was pretty hard to believe that I was in artist alley at one of the biggest Comic shows in America and attendees were asking me for books by name, commissioned original art, and wanted prints signed.
The show was a mad success, I was hoping to only break even (travel and lodging are a real bear until I am an invited guest) But I actually ended up turning a small profit. I take great joy in comparing this to my first con ever, HeroesCon 2014. I ordered an unreasonable 500 *cough idiot cough* copies of my 8-page mini-comic. I sold 5 copies and needless to say, was deep in the red before the weekend was over. Comparing that to NYCC where I got close to selling out a few books and several people came specifically asking about Old Man Windu. Really made my day.
“If you start at the bottom you can only go up.”
I disagree, up is not the only option. You can stay right there at the bottom. You have to try to climb to get higher, and with each step, you risk falling further, but with each step, you will become more confident as you gain more skills to slow a stumble or stop a fall.
I could have quit after that first con failure. that could have been my peak. Instead, years later, I reached a new summit.
The next mountain to climb is being an invited guest. Next year I am on the books as a guest for two shows, possibly more. I’ll keep you up to date.
